The submersible, as well as its predecessor LULA, is used in different scientific projects in the Azores, namely: for studying deep water coral habitats, for documenting habitats and benthic communities up to 1000 metres of depth, hydrothermal vents, photomosaicking, and for studying the hunting grounds of sperm whales and large squid.

LULA1000 is based on our long deep-sea experience with LULA500. She is a stable workhorse for performing all kinds of special tasks, such as high resolution side scanning, precise photo mosaicking and efficient sampling. The LULA1000 is a true deep-sea oceanographic vessel.
